As a child, I never envisioned a career in tech but I was always the child my mum would call to explain why the TV was displaying Chinese or why her phone wasn’t functioning as it should. I had a natural interest in technology. Manuals were my favourite books to read.
During my service year in 2018, I worked with the ICT department and that was my first real exposure to tech. Even though my job did not involve coding in any way, it was an enjoyable experience. That year I learnt how to design with CorelDraw and gradually I started my journey into the world of tech. I don’t design anymore because I did not enjoy the learning or the designing part one bit and with that realization, I began to search for another field in tech that was worth the months of learning and practice. I took an Introduction to Programming course on Coursera and at the first instance, I knew I wanted to keep learning.
Why I Chose to build a Career in Software Development
- There is a lot to learn.
I adapt very easily to tasks. Even though it might take a few months to figure things out, once I am familiar with the job and can carry out the tasks seamlessly, they become monotonous to me and I get bored of them.
I always knew I had to find that thing I could do for the rest of my life and not try to kill myself from how basic the job was. Tech honestly has been great for me. I have been learning to code for some months now and there is always something to learn. A software developer always needs to keep up with the latest technologies and trends to have the right skillset for every technical challenge. I love that the more you grow, the more you learn. I love how similar yet so different every project is. It’s a great feeling, one I will maximise and enjoy for as long as I can.
- Solid Career Path.
The demand for skilled software developers has been on a continuous rise with no signs of abating anytime soon. As long as you are up-to-date with whatever skill is in demand you’d always have something to do. Personally, that is a double win for me, getting to do something I enjoy while having a secured job and a secured bag while being at the centre of the technological change the world is going through and contribute to society’s progress.
- I HONESTLY LOVE IT!
I recently found out that I am dyslexic and suddenly my learning difficulties made a lot more sense. It makes sense how hard it is to put my thoughts in words and then in writing, but that is just a little glitch in what makes a beautiful journey for me. Tech has been a creative outlet for me, each time I work on a project, I get to express some form of creativity which has made reading and researching great. This is just the beginning for me but I am very much excited to be on this journey. I can’t wait to look back and laugh, first at how ridiculous this article is and at how nervous I was to begin.
Progression, in my opinion, is often identifying shortcomings – whether it’s views or the things you’re doing in your life, your relationships – and trying to find the places where you improve on those. -Trevor Noah
